چکیده

The modelling of water and energy exchanges between Soil-Vegetation and the ATmosphere (SVAT) often assimilates remotely sensed time series of Vegetation Indices (VIs). At first order, spectral combinations like the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) are known for their ability to witness the geographic and seasonal distribution of greenness on continental surfaces. Another usual combination is the ShortWave Vegetation Index (SWVI), which is more sensitive to the vegetation structure and water content than NDVI (Gao et al. 1996). According to recent published studies (e.g. Maki et al. 2006), the difference between NDVI and SWVI (Δ hereafter) should theoretically relate to the vegetation water stress.

Assessment of vegetation vulnerability to ENSO warm events over Africa

The study investigates the vulnerability of vegetation over Africa to El-Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events using the moving window statistical correlation analysis technique. The correlation analysis was done betweenNormalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) data fromAdvanced VeryHigh Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) and an ENSO index, namely Multivariate ENSO Index (MEI). The study devel...

How energy and water availability constrain vegetation water-use along the North Australian Tropical Transect

Energy and water availability were identified as the first order controls of evapotranspiration(ET) in ecohyrodrology. With a ~1,000 km precipitation gradient and distinct wet-dry climate, the North Australian Tropical Transect (NATT) was well suited for evaluating how energy andwater availabilities constrain water use by vegetation, but has not been done yet. In this study,we addressed this que...

Banded vegetation in some Australian semi-arid landscapes: 20 years of field observations to support the development and evaluation of numerical models of vegetation pattern evolution

Periodic vegetation patterns (PVPs) are striking features of many global drylands. Although they have attracted wide research study, resulting in many hypotheses, their origin and controlling factors remain unresolved. Theoretical works dominate a large literature seeking to account for the occurrence and properties of PVPs, especially banded vegetation patterns (‘tiger bush’). In light of...

Interannual Variability of Vegetation in the United States and its Relation to El Ni~ no/Southern Oscillation

The Normalized Di erence Vegetation Index (NDVI) is widely accepted as a good indicator for providing vegetation properties and associated changes for large scale geographic regions. Using multivariate time series data analysis methods based on Principal Component transform and Wavelet Decomposition, a sequence of 11-year monthly Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR)-derived NDVI dat...

Exploring relationships between ENSO and vegetation vigour in the south-east USA using AVHRR data

This research explores the relationship between El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), captured by equatorial PaciŽ c Ocean Sea Surface Temperature (SST), and interannual variation in vegetation vigour in the southeast USA, captured by Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Normalized DiVerence Vegetation Index (NDVI), for the period 1982–1992. The moving average and ‘baseline’ methods ...
